Introducing the Richard Mille RM 74-01 and RM 74-02 watches
Richard Mille watches exude a confidence that comes from knowing that they are at the top of their game and that everything is just right. Their construction is impeccable, and the materials and connections are so incredibly high-tech that you feel like you need an advanced degree in physics to fully understand them. As for the aesthetics? Well, that's Richard Mille. There's a rugged beauty to these watches that makes them feel like they exist in a slightly parallel dimension, both real and otherworldly. The two new additions to the Richard Mille Automatic Tourbillon collection, the RM 74-01 and RM 74-02, certainly possess these unique qualities.
First up is the more understated of the two, the RM 74-01. This watch features Richard Mille's signature tonneau-shaped case in a grey cermet that combines the lightness of titanium with the rigidity of ceramic - a combination that works brilliantly on a watch, we have to say. This material is Richard Mille’s exclusive patent in the watch industry, and they have taken it to the extreme. The low-key grey case houses the brand’s in-house developed CRMT6 movement, and the plasma-treated titanium bridges not only highlight the slender and curvaceous case, but also highlight the tourbillon with free-sprung balance at the bottom of the dial.
If the RM 74-01 was understated, the RM 74-02 is pure luxury. The case middle and movement bridge are both 18K red gold, but what really makes this watch shine is another material embellished with gold: gold-leafed Carbon TPT. Richard Mille has a long and rich history in the field of Carbon TPT, and this watch is its latest interpretation. This material meets all the brand’s requirements. It is light, corrosion-resistant and extremely technical. The final material is made of approximately 600 layers of Carbon TPT and gold foil, alternating the direction of the fibers at 45 degrees to ensure strength and a unique appearance.
Incorporating gold into Carbon TPT is extremely challenging, as the two metals have very different properties, making the welding and finishing process extremely delicate. The end result speaks for itself, with the laminated layers giving the RM 74-02 its unique look.
